TO THE GLORY OF GOD
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Study No 4
LEADERSHIP ATTITUDES and SKILLS
(a) The following list will show us the attitudes that Jacob
had as a shepherd over his flock:
1. TENDERNESS:
(Genesis 33:13) "The children are tender..."
2. SENSITIVITY:
(Genesis 33:13) "The flocks and the herds have young
with them..."
3. GENTLENESS:
(Genesis 33:13) "The flock will die if men overdrive
them in one day..."
4. OBSERVATION:
(Genesis 33:14) "The flock must be led softly..."
5. PATIENCE:
(Genesis 33:14) "The flock must only be lead as much
as the youngest can endure..."
(b) Each shepherd can believe the Lord to help him guide his
flock effectively, for God has surely promised to do so:
1. Psalm 23:2, "He leadeth me beside the still
waters..."
2. Psalm 77:20, "Thou leadest thy people like a
flock..."
3. Psalm 78:52-54, "He led forth His own sheep and
guided them in the wilderness like a
flock..."
4. John 10:3, "He calleth His own sheep by name
and leadeth them out..."
Fourth, the shepherd was to be a physician to his sheep.
The word "Physician" in the English language means, "a person
that heals, relieves or comforts". In the Hebrew language
the word "physician" means "to mend by stitching; to cure; to
cause healing; to repair; and to make whole". In the Greek
language, the word means, "to make whole, and to set free by
curing".
Sheep Diseases
(a) The shepherd should watch for the many different diseases
that are prevalent among sheep. The following list of
diseases, which a sheep will at one time or another have, can
serve as a warning list for each shepherd. We will show how
each of these diseases spiritually apply to the flock of God.
1. Natural Disease:
Overeating Disease ( which may come from)
a. A sudden change of food
b. Feeding lambs of various size together
Spiritual Truth:
a. A Sudden change of teaching, or spiritual food of any kind
can be fatal to any people; change must come slow and
progressively.
b. All people do not have the same spiritual need. There are
different growth levels in the flock. Thus, the need is a
specialized ministry to all of the different levels of the
people.
2. Natural Disease:
White Muscle Disease ( which may come from:)
a. A vitamin deficiency & inbalanced diet.
b. A result of which is death of the offspring
Spiritual Truth:
a. The people must have a balance diet of practical,
devotional, spiritual, inspirational, and instructional food
for proper growth.
b. The Spiritual reproduction of the people will be stifled if
their diet is inbalanced.
3. Natural Disease:
Twin Lamb Disease (which may come from:)
Low blood pressure due to stress. The ewes with a tendency
toward this disease can be discovered when the shepherd even
gently drives the sheep, and they exhibit no energy to be
driven.
Spiritual Truth:
Undue pressure upon the sheep may cause ill spiritual births.
4. Natural Disease:
Grass Tetany Disease (which may come from:)
Low magnetism in the blood caused by lush grass.
Spiritual Truth:
a. A mixture of lush spiritual food with dry food is needed
when sheep are fed with the Word.
5. Natural Disease:
Pneumonia Disease
- Caused by an excessive amount of stress upon the sheep.
Spiritual Truth:
The Shepherd should not be guilty of oppressing the flock with
too much pressure. The Shepherd should not over drive those
under his authority.
6. Natural Disease:
Foot Rot Disease:
Caused by too much time spent in wet pasture and threatens the
walk of the sheep.
Spiritual Truth:
Dry spiritual periods are needed, as well as wet periods, as
the people are washed in the water of the Word and follow the
Spirit on a daily basis.
7. Natural Disease:
Bloat Disease
- Caused by feeding on lush legumes and pastures which disturbs
the sheep's digestion.
Spiritual Truth:
- Too much rich teaching that cannot be put into action causes
problems in the life of the people and will result ultimate
spiritual death.
8. Natural Disease:
Parasitic Disease
Parasites may either be on the internal or external of the
sheep's body. Result, unhealthy sheep.
Spiritual Truth:
The Shepherd must, at times, inspect the people for hidden
areas that will bring spiritual death and also be aware of the
outward involvements that may be sapping all of the people's
strength away from God.
9. Natural Disease:
Poisonous Plants Disease
Poisonous plants are usually hidden among the nutritional
plants.
Spiritual Truth:
The Shepherd must carefully examine all the sources from which
his people receive their teaching and preaching.
(b) Types of Sheep
The shepherd-physician should also be aware of the many
different kinds of sheep that are in his flock. There are
different sheep with different problems. There are at least
three different kinds of sheep that need special attention.
First, there is a solitary sheep. The solitary sheep can be
identified by his constant straying from the flock. The solitary
sheep does not eat with or stay with the flock. He is the loner
of the flock. This straying is not something that the shepherd
will notice easily unless he can identify the sheep each time it
strays away. Spiritually speaking, this sheep has some real
inward problems. There might be some deep wounds inside that
have caused a lack of trust in the other sheep or even in the
shepherd himself. The solitary sheep might feel the other sheep
are too mature or immature for his fellowship. All three of
these attitudes are unhealthy and need to be dealt with by the
shepherd.
Second, there is the hermit sheep. The hermit sheep is
different than the solitary sheep, although there are some
similarities between them. Both of them do not like to be with
the flock or the shepherd, but each has a different reason as to
why. The hermit sheep will stay away from the flock because he
does not want to be sheared or clipped by the shepherd. The
hermit sheep has an uncanny way of knowing when it is shearing
time for the flock. The hermit sheep will do anything to get out
of the clipping process. The shepherd must continually be
watching for this kind of sheep so that it cannot hide. The
hermit sheep, although very happy with his uncut wool, will
bring destruction upon himself. His own uncut wool, if left
long enough, will eventually grow so long that it will cover his
eyes and blind him. If he stays in this condition long enough,
he will surely run into some real problems. He will not be able
to see the enemy or the thickets that will snare him and kill
him.
Third, is the wandering sheep. The wandering sheep is among
the most dangerous of all. He is never satisfied with his
present pasture land. Because of this dissatisfaction, the
wandering sheep is forever trying to find a way out of his
sheepfold or pasture. In his attempts, he always seems to find
either an opening in the fence, a hole in the ground, or a gate
left open through which to crawl. He spends all of his time
looking for his escape. This causes the wandering sheep never to
settle down and enjoy his present pasture. One of the biggest
problems of the wandering sheep is that he will influence the
young of the flock to do the same. This will breed a
discontentment in the young, and they will grow up to be just
like the wandering sheep. Because of this destructive influence
on the young of the flock, the sheep that wanders is removed from
the flock. The wandering spirit has to be broken.
